CHAPTER ELEVEN
âI still cannot believe you are traveling to another province to buy a moose stuffy.â
Matt shot Annie a lopsided grin before turning his attention back to the road. She tried to ignore the little skip her heart did at the sight of his smile. It was something she was getting used to, now that theyâd been in Prince Edward Island for three weeks. Even though sheâd known they would see each other a lot because of work, she had never expected she see him almost every day.
It was starting to feel like home. Their house, the island, Mattâs family ⦠Matt. He was becoming the person she relied on, to talk to, laugh with, confide in. He had stepped into their family effortlessly and now that he was here, she couldnât imagine not doing life with him. But that also made her wary. He was stirring up feelings and emotions she didnât know what to do with. She didnât want to be noticing how handsome he was, she didnât want to get a little jolt of electricity when he smiled at her, or feel all giddy when they shared a laugh. They were friends. Good friends. And she needed to remind herself of that because what they had was too special to risk. There was no way she wanted him to detect anything other than friend vibes from her because she didnât want him to feel awkward.
She turned her attention to the view outside, remembering how it already seemed like ages ago that sheâd driven across this bridge with an angry teenager whoâd been hell-bent on leaving.
âMaddy is pretty convincing, not that she asked for this or anything. But that tragic story about trying to collect an animal stuffy from every province, but missing out on a moose from New Brunswick was pretty sad.â
Annie rolled her eyes but couldnât help but smile. âYou are easy prey, Matt. A total sap. We just didnât find a roadside stop that had any moose stuffies left, but I promised her that weâd get one. I had no idea youâd actually be driving to New Brunswick to get one.â
âItâs only an hour from here and since our last farm call was so close to the bridge, I thought it was perfect. All the other stuffies were picked up in the provinces you drove through, Iâm not going to cop out and just order one from Amazon. Thatâs not authentic. You even got Christmas shopping done at the village. Besides, weâll be back in time to pick the kids up from school.â
Annie ignored the stab of whatever it was that hit her. It was an innocuous statement. It was factual. They had to pick up the kids from school. But he made it sound like they were their kids. That it was a given. That they were their responsibility. She liked that, very much in some ways. Her kids had been just her responsibility for so long now that sheâd forgotten the comfort that came from having someone else care about them.
